We are going to listen to five songs each week. I will introduce you to the stories behind both the songs and the singers.
Exactly now I assume you are wondering … Who am I? Allora … My name is Cocopraise but you can easily call me Coco. I am 100% an Original Italian Brain.

I know… I’ve talked a lot… let’s listen to the first song now.
As you know, this is the “Sanremo Week”. The famous Festival of the Italian song. 71th edition this year.
Because we are starting by chance at the same time, well… let’s start introducing to you five songs with a curiosity behind each one of them.
The Guy we are gonna listen to is Rino Gaetano. He was born in one of the beautiful regions of Italy. You know which one? Calabria.
He was a singer-songwriter, very famous for his satirical songs. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1981 in a car accident but he is still alive in the heart of a lot of Italians.
So, what’s the fan fact behind this song? ALLORA … Rino Gaetano brought this song to the Sanremo 1978 edition and you know what? This is the first song with the word SEX presented in the history of the Sanremo Festival exactly the 28th.

Now, let’s fly to the second song. They are the Decibel, an Italian punk rock band formed in 1977 and three years later they went to Sanremo with the song Contessa, which means Countess. So, despite the content of the song sounding like a dedication to a mean woman, the song was a dedication to Renato Zero, another great Italian singer.
I will talk to you about him in the next episodes.
Anyway, nobody from Renato Zero staff denied or confirmed anything, the same happened from Decibel staff. What’s the story? It’s been more than 40 years we don’t know the truth behind this song. What we can assume for sure it’s this song is AMAZING, Buon Ascolto Beautiful People.

Here we go straight away to the third song.
The next song is called “Lei Verrà ” which means She will come.. And please, Gentlemen be gentle. The author of the song is Mango, one of my favourite singers ever.
He came from another one of the beautiful regions in Italy, Basilicata. Well known with its ancient name Lucania.
I think his voice it’s something special and even in this case … unfortunately, he passed away in 2014, BUT… during his long career in the 1986 he went to Sanremo Festival with 4 songs in total:
“Io nascerò” sung by Loretta Goggi as theme song of the 36th Sanremo Festival edition
“Re” sung by Loredana Bertè as first participation at the Sanremo Festival. BTW we will talk about this talented woman in the next episodes.
and
“Nessun dolore” sung by Anna Bussotti written by him and of course, Lei VerrĂ written and sung by him.
Unfortunately no one of the songs won that tournament but the song “Io nascero’”, I will born, and “Lei Verrà ”, the songs we are going to listen to right now, will be both great successes then.

So. We have arrived at the Fourth song, right Beautiful People?
The following one, I have to admit, ain’t very famous in Italy. But what’s happened it’s something unique in the history of the Sanremo Festival.
You have to know that between 1980 and 1984 all the participants in the tournament pretended to sing live. In fact, in all those editions the orchestra never apparead.
In 1983 a talented woman named Sibilla went to Sanremo with a beautiful song written by Giusto Pio, a talented Italian songwriter, and one of the best Italian musicians named Franco Battiato. I have no doubt to call him a legend.
Anyway, what’s the story? Talented singer, Best Musician … Did she win that edition? Not really, the name of the next song is Oppio, Opium and that time in Italy talking about a drug cheaper than a pint of beer, as the song sings, wasn’t exactly the best idea.
As a matter of fact, during her first exhibition, despite the fact that she was supposed to sing in playback, by mistake her microphone turned on and you can imagine the noise as the final result. She was disqualified.
One more thing, the chorus of the song “Uru belev sameach” it’s part of a Hebrew popular song which means Wake up with a cheerful heart.

Vabbe’ … we are going to listen to the last song of the first episode and I chose a song that won the 1981 edition of Sanremo Festival, Per Elisa sung by Alice.
The song has been written by herself, Franco Battiato and Giusto Pio. The same guys that 2 years later will bring Opium listened to a few moments ago to Sanremo Festival.
Alice is still active as a singer and she released 25 records in total reaching big audiences around the world.
The song talks about jealousy, betrayal, anger and revenge. In fact, this is the story of a woman left by her partner because of another woman. Super sad, isn’it? Unfortunately, it happens sometimes.
However, despite the clear content of the song you have to know that during the 80’s there was a national problem about drug addiction. Maybe this is the reason why someone started thinking this song was talking about drugs instead of the real meaning.
Recently the artist interviewed by “Rolling Stones” Italian edition confirmed she didn’t write the song talking about drugs.
One last thing last .. the 1981 Sanremo’s Festival edition has been the first that broadcasted all the phases of the tournament. In fact, it didn’t happen for many years.
